People save time and money by shopping online, booking cheap flights and holidays and using auction sites like Ebay.
It also helps people to keep in touch and make new friends.
e-Citizen is a fun and friendly way for people to learn how to use
the internet and email
The course features simulated websites to help people familiarize
themselves with how a website operates, whilst also learning how to use
the internet safely and securely.
It starts with how to switch on a computer and use a mouse and then
moves on to writing and sending emails, how to open files, how to shop
online and how to find information online to name just a few elements.
Success Story
Pensioner clicks with a new skill
A grandad who had
never used a computer until February has gained his e-Citizen
qualification. Tony Akhurst aged 75 says he is over the
moon to have passed the e-Citizen qualification.
Widower Tony a retired painter and decorator who has two children
and four grandchildren said: "I was always interested in computers. "I
have a friend in Bristol and whenever I go round to his house he is
always messing about on the computer. But because I was a manual worker
I never really had the chance to have a go."
He admits that he found the course very daunting at first and almost
gave up hope of ever getting the hang of IT but he persevered and has
conquered his technophobia.
He said: "After the third lesson I felt pretty despondent and
thought I'd never get the hang of it. There were so many things to
remember and so many buttons to press. But in the class I realised that
as soon as you had a problem, all you had to do was put your hand up
and one of the tutors would come and help you. Often it was just a
simple case of clicking a button on the mouse."
And the next step for Tony is to buy his own computer. He said: "I
didn't think I would ever need to use a computer so I never bought one
of my own. I'm looking forward to being able to browse the web whenever
I want. I go on lots of holidays so I'll be able to book them online
now. And I'm also interested in studying some genealogy."
He says he would recommend the e-Citizen course to anyone. "It's a
great course and the tutors are always there to answer any questions
that you have ' he said. Once you know how to use a computer it opens
up a whole new world for you."
